More exercise, less sugar, earlier nights. We know the goals exactly and fail anyway. The usual explanation is: too little discipline. It is almost always wrong.

Willpower is an exhaustible quantity. It lasts for a good day, maybe a good week. As soon as stress, tiredness or frustration come along, the strength sinks, and the old behaviour returns. Whoever builds change on discipline alone builds on sand. That is biology, not a character flaw.

What behavioural science says

Modern research sets the lever elsewhere: small steps hung on fixed anchors, an environment that makes the good easy. James Clear puts the decisive point in words: in the end you act by who you believe you are. The habit follows identity. Whoever sees themselves as a runner runs, without having to talk themselves into it each morning.

A step further

Here we think around the corner. If behaviour follows identity, then the real lever lies in a question: who do I want to be? Forcing a new identity by sheer effort, however, is only willpower on a higher floor, just as exhausting.

The old texts know a surprising image for this. They speak of a new heart that is given, and of a renewed mind, out of which the new behaviour then grows by itself. Perhaps you have nothing to do with faith, you needn’t. Just hear the change of direction: first inside, then outside.

First a person becomes someone new, then they act anew.

In everyday life this means nothing mystical. Stop fighting yourself alone, and begin to see yourself as someone who already does this good thing. Every small repetition then becomes a confirmation: this is who I am. Identity carries the habit, and the habit firms up the identity.

Making it concrete

Start small: one page instead of a chapter. The start is the real hurdle.

Attach it to an anchor: “After brushing my teeth …” The existing routine carries the new thing.

Shape your environment: make the good visible and easy, the distracting inconvenient.

Confirm it in your self-image: after each repetition, inwardly: “This is who I am.”

A small experiment for this week

Choose a habit and phrase it as identity: instead of “I want to read more” rather “I am someone who reads a page every day.” Set the bar absurdly low and do it once. You’re not gathering achievement, you’re gathering evidence of who you are.

Change that lasts feels in the end less like a fight than like coming home, to a version of you that is already laid out within you. Perhaps you sense, very quietly, that you don’t have to make yourself into someone entirely new, but may become someone you already are at the core. You needn’t believe it. Start with one single small thing and see who comes to light in the process.

General impulses for your own reflection, no substitute for therapy or medical treatment.
